Two companies are featured in this quarter’s tree service update: John Egart's Tree Service and Environmental Tree Service.
Why Trust Signals Matter More Than Ever
Artificial intelligence has transformed digital marketing by making it possible to produce large amounts of content in a fraction of the time it once required. A business can now publish dozens of blog posts within days instead of months, leading many companies to believe that simply creating more content will result in higher search rankings and more customers. While AI is an excellent research and writing assistant, it is not a substitute for real expertise. Problems arise when businesses rely on AI to mass-produce generic articles with little human oversight, no original photography, and no evidence that the company has actually performed the work it describes. As AI-generated content becomes increasingly common, search engines and consumers alike are placing greater value on authenticity and trust.
Someone Had to Try It

A recent example illustrates this challenge. John Egart's Tree Service had an average of about 50 in organic search traffic per month between June 2025 and March 2026. In April, their traffic jumped to 8,0000. Truthfully, we thought this was a mistake because the number did not make sense until we looked at their website. In May, the traffic dropped to 2000 and this month it is at 224. Starting in March, the company published approximately ten AI-generated blog posts totaling nearly 30,000 words in a short period of time. Initially, the strategy appeared successful as the company’s organic traffic increased dramatically. Within a few months, however, traffic had declined by more than 90 percent. The case demonstrates an important lesson: publishing large volumes of AI-generated content alone is not a sustainable search engine optimization strategy. Lasting visibility is built on credibility, not simply content volume. But, heck, someone had to try it.
As AI-generated content becomes easier to create, trust has emerged as one of the most valuable competitive advantages in local search. Google’s objective has always been to provide users with the most helpful and reliable information available. Today, businesses that demonstrate genuine expertise send much stronger signals than those that publish the most words. Search engines increasingly evaluate a company’s overall credibility through a combination of authentic customer reviews, original photography, expert-written content, an active Google Business Profile, meta content quality, and evidence that the business has real-world experience serving customers.
Among these trust signals, Google Reviews have become one of the most influential factors in how consumers evaluate local businesses. When homeowners compare tree companies, landscapers, contractors, or other service providers, they naturally want to know whether a company can be trusted. A business with hundreds of detailed reviews collected over many years demonstrates a consistent history of satisfying customers. Those reviews build confidence before a prospective customer ever visits the company’s website. Google Reviews have evolved into one of the most important components of off-page SEO because they influence both customer trust and local search visibility. Obtaining reviews is an internal company function since office staff manages customer relationships, not the marketing agency. However, there are applications such as Nice Job that can automate the review acquisition process.
Original photography is another powerful trust signal that has become increasingly valuable in the age of artificial intelligence. Anyone can post a stock image or create an AI illustration of a tree removal, but only a real company can document completed projects. Authentic photographs and reels placed on Facebook, Instagram, and Google Business Profile demonstrate experience and provide visual proof that the company performs the services it advertises.
Use AI As a Tool
None of this suggests that businesses should avoid artificial intelligence. On the contrary, they should embrace it. Downs Digital uses Claude and ChatGPT daily. AI is an outstanding productivity tool when used appropriately. Downs Digital likes to think of AI as the cream filling in an Oreo cookie. The two chocolate cookies represent the human writer. The first cookie asks the question. AI provides information, ideas, or a first draft. The second cookie is where the real value is created. The writer edits, restructures, fact-checks, adds expertise, injects personality, and applies judgment. AI sits in the middle of the process—it does not replace either side.
Today’s businesses need to build trust across multiple digital channels by earning authentic Google Reviews, maintaining an active Google Business Profile, documenting completed work with original photography, publishing helpful educational content, and demonstrating real expertise within their industry. Together, these elements create a lasting digital presence. Using AI as a word processor will not.
A Local Example: How Environmental Tree Care Unseated Ross Tree
The changing importance of trust signals can be seen in Denver’s own tree care market. For several years, Ross Tree built one of the strongest organic search presences in the region through expert-written content, technical SEO, and a well-optimized website. Throughout much of that time, Ross Tree consistently generated more organic search traffic than Environmental Tree Care.
That changed this month.
According to current organic search estimates, Environmental Tree Care now generates approximately 2,200 monthly organic visitors compared with Ross Tree’s 1,300, moving Environmental into the top position among locally owned Denver tree care companies. Although Ross Tree has slipped to second place, there remains a significant gap between Ross Tree and the next group of locally owned competitors. August's traffic estimates will help determine whether Environmental's lead represents a lasting change or a temporary fluctuation. See the Denver Locally Owned Tree Company Organic Search Traffic table below.
One of the most significant differences between the two companies is the number of reviews on Google Business Profile. Environmental Tree Care has accumulated more than 1,000 Google reviews over many years, while Ross Tree currently has approximately 117 reviews and has added few new reviews since the beginning of the year. It appears Google rewarded Environmental Tree with more organic search traffic this month compared to others.
This example illustrates an important shift in local and off-page SEO. Publishing high-quality content and maintaining a technically sound website remain essential, but they are no longer enough by themselves. As AI-generated content becomes more common, it appears Google is placing greater emphasis on signals that are much harder to manufacture, including customer reviews, original photography, and demonstrated expertise. Increasing trust signals now is an important part of the SEO effort.
Taken together, these two stories illustrate where local SEO is heading for professional service companies or any company that sells to the public. One company attempted to accelerate growth through AI-generated content and experienced a dramatic rise followed by a steep decline. Another company invested for years in building customer trust through more than 1,000 Google reviews and has now moved into the top position in Denver's organic search rankings. While no one outside Google knows the precise weight of each ranking factor, the contrast suggests that trust has become one of the most valuable assets a local business can build online.
